Oh, the Bolex, how I hate it so (maybe hate is too harsh a word). I actually enjoy working with film. I get nostalgic and feel a connection to the great ancestral filmmakers before me that made films with car-sized equipment. Just the sound of the film running through the camera is enough to make me smile. But I’ve never had anything to do with cut and paste editing or developing. I just send it off with my name on a return envelope and in a few weeks my film magically appears on a miniDV at my address.
The video below was my second time ever handling/filming with a Bolex, but it was the first narrative that I shot on film, and so it’s a little progress marker of my progression through this field. I made plenty of mistakes that I probably shouldn’t have; like poor lighting, shots that were out of focus, and syncing sound up.
In the end, I was happy with my project. It was filmed for my Junior Narrative class and required me to use an egg in some way. Being the weird person I am, this is what I came up with. I had to have two characters interact and wasn’t allowed to have any onscreen dialogue. The result was egg sex.
Would I work with a Bolex again? Maybe. The preparation involved in ordering an amount of film adds more headaches than I want. I’m still very interested in film, though. Super 16 and 32mm would be a lot of fun to mess around with if they weren’t so expensive. Hopefully, sometime down the line I’ll have an opportunity to shoot with both.
